Reframe Systems Raises $40M to Scale Robotic Home Microfactories
The startup aims to combat the U.S. housing shortage by industrializing construction through physical AI and localized automation.
Reframe Systems has raised $40 million in funding to expand its network of robotic microfactories across North America. The investment, led by Energy Impact Partners, aims to industrialize the residential building process to address a critical housing deficit in the United States.
As part of this growth phase, the company is launching its first microfactory, FAB1, in Billerica, Massachusetts, on October 5, 2026. The facility was established with equipment costs totaling less than $5 million. Once operational, FAB1 is designed to produce up to 500 multifamily units or 250 single-family homes annually. The company's long-term objective is to build 1 million homes worldwide by 2040.
The Shift to Industrialized Building
Founded in 2022 by former Amazon Robotics leaders Vikas Enti, Felipe Polido, and Aaron Small, Reframe Systems is attempting to solve a systemic failure in the U.S. housing market. The country currently faces a deficit of approximately 4.5 million homes, a crisis worsened by a fragmented construction industry. Traditional building relies on a shrinking pool of skilled trades and a complex web of manual labor and subcontractors, which often leads to delays and unpredictable costs.
To bypass these bottlenecks, Reframe utilizes "Pixels to Parts" software and physical AI. This approach shifts the bulk of construction from the unpredictable environment of a job site to a controlled, automated factory setting. By treating home construction as a manufacturing process rather than a manual craft, the company can standardize quality and accelerate delivery timelines.
Market Implications and Scalability
This transition to localized microfactories allows for greater adaptability to local zoning laws and improved climate resilience. By reducing the reliance on fragmented manual labor, Reframe aims to drastically lower build times—citing the ability to deliver a triple-decker home in 180 days—while simultaneously reducing overall costs.
CEO and co-founder Vikas Enti emphasizes that the housing shortage is more than a statistic, stating, "The housing shortage is an abstraction until you’re the person who can’t find a home in the community you want to live in." He further notes that the company's model creates a feedback loop where "every home we deliver makes the next one faster and cheaper to build, because our software, robotics and network learn from each deployment."

The success of the Billerica facility will serve as a blueprint for the company's broader North American expansion. While the core technology and funding are now in place, the industry will be watching to see if the microfactory model can scale rapidly enough to make a dent in the millions of missing housing units.
