UKy researchers use VR to treat cognitive dysfunction
A collaboration between University of Kentucky researchers and VRTogether replaces tedious clinical drills with immersive gaming and music to foster brain recovery.
Researchers at the University of Kentucky are utilizing virtual reality (VR) to develop new interventions for individuals suffering from cognitive dysfunction. Led by Dr. Amanda Glueck, the team is shifting away from traditional clinical memory tests toward immersive, gamified experiences designed to engage the brain more effectively.
Developed in partnership with VRTogether CEO Richard Hoagland, the program integrates interactive virtual environments and music-based tasks. A key component of this approach is the "SingTogether" program, which uses music to foster connection and engagement among participants with cognitive impairment. According to the researchers, these immersive experiences build on evidence that gaming can improve reaction times and processing speeds, offering a more dynamic alternative to standard medical exercises.
The shift from clinical drills
This initiative is the result of nearly a decade of research by Dr. Glueck into neurorehabilitation and the use of VR to assist brain recovery. The core philosophy of the study is that traditional memory exercises—such as memorizing a list of words—can be boring and intimidating for patients who are already aware of their cognitive deficits.
"We're not specifically trying to teach them, 'Hey I want you remember these five words,' which is kinda boring and can be somewhat daunting if you know you have a memory problem," Dr. Glueck said. By replacing these drills with interactive experiences, the team aims to lower the psychological barrier to therapy and increase patient participation.
Implications for cognitive care
If successful, this approach could transform the treatment of cognitive decline by providing a personalized, less stressful method of therapy. By moving away from repetitive clinical drills, the program seeks to empower patients to overcome functional barriers through technology. Richard Hoagland emphasized that the objective is not to replace reality, but to provide opportunities for patients to overcome the challenges they face.
This shift toward immersive therapy represents a broader move in neurorehabilitation toward patient-centric care, where the emotional and psychological state of the patient is considered as critical as the clinical exercise itself.
Expanding the research scope
While the foundation of the work lies in neurorehabilitation, the current research is expanding to address a wider range of conditions. The team is currently conducting studies on mild cognitive impairment and has introduced the "PARTNER" program, which is specifically designed for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) to help reduce the incidence of delirium.
Future efforts will continue to explore how these virtual interventions can be scaled to help a broader population of patients facing age-related memory loss and other forms of cognitive dysfunction.
