Xreal Aura Reservations Top 10,000 as Early-Bird Packages Sell Out
The first AR glasses powered by Google's Android XR see strong early demand ahead of a fall launch.
Xreal has announced that global reservations for its Aura smart glasses have surpassed 10,000 units. The strong early interest signals a significant market appetite for lightweight spatial computing hardware as the company prepares for a commercial release this fall.
Demand for the device has already exhausted several early-access options. According to company data, both the Founder Priority Pass and the Launch Credit package—which offered a $199 credit for a $99 deposit—are now completely sold out. Xreal has stated that the final retail price for the Aura will be capped at $1,500 before tax.
The Android XR Foundation
The Aura represents a pivotal shift in augmented reality hardware as the first pair of glasses to run Google's Android XR operating system. Co-developed with Google, the device is designed to bridge the gap between the bulk of traditional VR headsets and the portability of standard eyewear. To achieve this, the glasses weigh less than 95g and feature a 70-degree field of view.
Under the hood, the Aura utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite platform. To maintain its lightweight form factor, the device includes a separate control puck that houses the primary components necessary to run the Android XR environment. This integration allows the Aura to support the Google Play Store, enabling a wide ecosystem of apps and specialized content, including the Fox Sports VR app and titles such as 'Fallout: Factions' and 'Project Hail Mary'.
Market Implications
This surge in reservations suggests that consumers and developers are eager for an open, Android-based alternative to proprietary XR ecosystems. "Surpassing 10,000 reservations is an exciting signal of demand across consumers, developers, and enterprise partners," said Chi Xu, CEO and co-founder of Xreal.
By successfully implementing Android XR, Xreal is not only validating Google's strategy in the spatial computing space but also setting a technical benchmark for future optical see-through (OST) glasses. The ability to deliver a full OS experience in a sub-100g frame could push competitors to prioritize ergonomics over raw processing power.
What to Watch
As the fall launch approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the Aura can maintain this momentum upon general availability. While the reservation numbers are promising, the true test will be the stability of the Android XR integration and the depth of the app library at launch. Further details regarding the exact release date and final shipping tiers remain to be confirmed by Xreal.
