Dogs possess a neurological ability to differentiate between various human negative emotions, according to new research using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The study demonstrates that dogs do not simply perceive a general state of distress, but can specifically distinguish fearful human faces from those expressing anger or sadness.

Researchers, including Laura V. Cuaya and Rául Hernández Pérez, conducted the study by placing dogs in an fMRI machine and presenting them with photographs of human faces. These images depicted a single person expressing four distinct emotions: happiness, fear, anger, and sadness. The resulting brain scans revealed that dogs' brains exhibit unique activity patterns for each of these emotional states. Notably, the data showed that dogs process human smiles in a specific brain region and can successfully tell the difference between a fearful expression and other negative ones, such as sadness or anger.

The evolution of canine cognition

This discovery builds upon previous research that had already established the ability of dogs to recognize happy human faces. While identifying a positive emotion is relatively straightforward, the ability to categorize different types of negative affect is significantly more complex.
