Rocket Lab Unveils GHOST: Containerized Spaceport for Rapid Global Deployment

The Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology enables Electron and HASTE rockets to launch from deployable, shipping-container infrastructure.

Rocket Lab has introduced GHOST, a portable launch system designed to enable rapid, responsive space missions from anywhere in the world. By removing the dependency on permanent fixed infrastructure, the company can now deploy orbital and suborbital capabilities on short notice.

Formally known as Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology, GHOST is a fully containerized system. The entire suite—including the rockets, launch infrastructure, ground support, and range control—is packaged within standard shipping containers. This architecture supports both the Electron orbital rocket and the HASTE suborbital vehicle, as both platforms share the same ground infrastructure.

Expanding Global Reach

Rocket Lab currently operates Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand and Launch Complex 2 and 3 in Virginia. The company will first implement the GHOST system at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska, which will be designated as Launch Complex 4. This expansion adds two pads to the company's portfolio, bringing its total number of operated pads to six across two hemispheres.

Sir Peter Beck, founder and CEO of Rocket Lab, stated that the goal of GHOST is to package launch capabilities into a deployable system that can serve critical programs from wherever those missions require.

The Shift to Responsive Space

This move toward portability marks a significant shift toward "responsive space" capabilities. By eliminating the need for permanent construction, Rocket Lab can activate launch sites rapidly to support time-critical national security missions and missile defense. Furthermore, the system provides a pathway for allied nations to establish sovereign launch capabilities without the overhead of building a traditional spaceport.

Beyond security, the ability to deploy infrastructure to various global coordinates allows Rocket Lab to open new trajectories for both orbital and suborbital missions, providing greater flexibility in how and where payloads reach space. This agility ensures that the company can respond to urgent orbital replacement needs or specific orbital inclinations that are unavailable from fixed sites.

Timeline for Deployment

While the system has been unveiled, it will take several years to become fully operational. Rocket Lab has scheduled the operational debut of the GHOST system for 2027. The first milestone for the technology will be a suborbital launch conducted from the new Alaska site, proving the viability of the containerized model before scaling to full orbital operations.
