First Diplodocus Fossils Found Outside North America Discovered in Spain

The discovery of a 150-million-year-old sauropod in Teruel suggests giant dinosaurs migrated across ancient land bridges.

Paleontologists have uncovered the first confirmed remains of a Diplodocus dinosaur outside of North America in Teruel, Spain. The discovery fundamentally alters the known geographic range of one of the prehistoric world's most iconic giants.

The fossils were located in the El Castellar municipality, specifically at the La Tejería site. The recovered remains consist of 14 well-preserved tail (caudal) vertebrae and several chevron bones. Based on these fragments, researchers estimate the specimen reached approximately 25 meters (82 feet) in length. This find establishes the specimen as another of the giant sauropods of the Spanish Jurassic.

A Shift in Paleogeography

Until this discovery, every confirmed Diplodocus specimen had been unearthed in the Morrison Formation of the western United States. These fossils date back approximately 150 million years to the Late Jurassic period. During this era, the supercontinent Pangea was in the process of splitting into Laurasia and Gondwana, a geological transition that saw the proto-North Atlantic Ocean begin to form.

Lead author Sergio Sánchez Fenollosa noted that the identification process was iterative, stating, "With each new result, the picture became clearer: we were looking at a Diplodocus."

Implications for Migration

This find provides the first concrete evidence that Diplodocus existed beyond the borders of North America. The presence of these massive sauropods in the Iberian Peninsula suggests that they were capable of migrating between North America and Europe, likely utilizing temporary land bridges that existed before the Atlantic Ocean fully separated the continents.

By proving that these giants were not endemic to a single continent, the discovery reshapes the scientific understanding of Late Jurassic dinosaur diversity. It highlights a higher level of connectivity between Mesozoic ecosystems than previously confirmed, suggesting that the distribution of large herbivores was more fluid across the northern hemisphere.

Future Research

While the identification of the species is confirmed, the discovery opens new questions regarding the exact timing and routes of these migrations. Researchers will now look for further evidence of Diplodocus-like species across other European sites to determine if the El Castellar specimen was an isolated occurrence or part of a wider, established population in Europe. This effort will help map the prehistoric corridors that allowed such massive creatures to traverse thousands of miles of changing terrain.
