GalaxEye Acquires StarOps to Bolster Satellite Engineering After Mission Drishti Loss

Indian space-tech startup GalaxEye has acquired StarOps in a strategic move to enhance its spacecraft development and satellite engineering capabilities. The acquisition comes as the company seeks to stabilize its technical foundation following a critical failure with its debut orbital mission.

GalaxEye recently launched Mission Drishti via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, but the company subsequently lost contact with the spacecraft. According to confirmed reports, the loss occurred during the early orbit phase following a solar storm. By absorbing StarOps, GalaxEye integrates specialized engineering expertise and proprietary satellite bus platforms into its internal operations to prevent similar setbacks in future deployments.

The OptoSAR Ambition

GalaxEye, which is backed by Infosys, is attempting to disrupt the Earth observation market with its proprietary 'OptoSAR' technology. This approach combines Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with Multispectral Imaging (MSI), allowing for high-resolution imaging that can penetrate cloud cover and darkness while maintaining the detail of optical sensors. To deploy this technology at scale, the company requires a highly reliable fleet of satellites capable of sustaining complex sensor payloads in the harsh environment of space.

Strategic Vertical Integration

This acquisition represents a pivot toward vertical integration and aggressive risk mitigation. By bringing StarOps' engineering team and spacecraft platforms in-house, GalaxEye aims to reduce its reliance on external vendors and accelerate its product development cycle. The move is designed to ensure higher reliability for the company's planned constellation of multi-sensor satellites, shifting the focus from purely sensor innovation to the robustness of the spacecraft carrying those sensors.

The Path Forward

Industry observers will now watch whether this integration allows GalaxEye to recover from the Drishti setback more quickly. The primary objective remains the successful deployment of the OptoSAR constellation, though the company must first prove it can maintain stable communication and operational control over its new hardware. While the acquisition strengthens its engineering bench, the ultimate test will be the performance of the next generation of spacecraft launched under the new integrated structure.
