Hyderabad's TakeMe2Space Targets 2027 for India's First Orbital Data Center

The startup is building a six-satellite constellation to process Earth observation data in orbit, bypassing traditional downlink bottlenecks.

Hyderabad-based startup TakeMe2Space is developing India's first orbital data center infrastructure to shift heavy data processing from the ground to space. The company aims to transform satellites from simple sensors into intelligent nodes capable of analyzing planetary data in real time.

To achieve this, TakeMe2Space is building the MOI constellation, a network of six satellites equipped with onboard compute capabilities. According to the company, the constellation is designed to deliver complete daily global coverage by the fourth quarter of 2027. The project is backed by Series A funding led by Chiratae Ventures, which reported the investment at $5 million.

The Shift to Orbital Computing

The core of the company's strategy is "orbital computing," a method of processing Earth observation data directly in orbit. Currently, satellites capture massive raw datasets that must be transmitted to Earth for analysis, creating a significant bandwidth bottleneck. By processing this information in space, TakeMe2Space intends to reduce the volume of data requiring transmission, allowing for near-instantaneous insights.

This approach arrives as the tech industry faces growing scrutiny over the sustainability of terrestrial AI data centers. Critics point to the massive power and water consumption required to maintain ground-based infrastructure. While some experts argue that liquid cooling and renewable energy are more practical terrestrial fixes, TakeMe2Space contends that high-volume satellite workloads are fundamentally better suited for space.

Engineering the Void

Operating a data center in orbit presents unique thermal and energy challenges. Ronak Kumar Samantray, Founder and CEO of TakeMe2Space, noted that "space does not offer cooling in the way people understand it on Earth," highlighting the difficulty of managing heat in a vacuum.

To address these constraints, the company has partnered with Hylenr Technologies to test compute modules powered by Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). These modules are intended to improve energy reuse and heat management, ensuring that the onboard computers can operate efficiently without overheating.

Industry Implications

If successful, the transition to orbital computing could revolutionize fields dependent on rapid data analysis, such as disaster response and climate monitoring. By eliminating the latency associated with traditional ground-based processing, the MOI constellation could provide critical alerts and environmental data seconds after capture rather than hours.

As TakeMe2Space moves toward its 2027 deployment goal, the industry will be watching the results of the LENR power tests. The success of these modules will determine whether orbital data centers can scale beyond small-scale experiments into a viable distributed edge computing network for the planet.
