MDA Space opens Québec control centre for CHORUS satellite constellation

MDA Space has opened the MDA CHORUS™ Control Centre in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Québec, marking a pivotal milestone for its upcoming Earth observation constellation. The facility will serve as the operational hub for a fleet of satellites scheduled for launch in late 2026, with commercial services expected to begin in early 2027.

The constellation will deploy via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and consists of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites operating in C-band and X-band. These satellites will operate in a unique mid-inclination orbit, providing daily access to up to 95% of the system's coverage area. The system is capable of versatile imaging, ranging from broad area swaths 700 km wide to high-resolution spotlight images with sub-metre precision.

Technical Heritage and Innovation

MDA CHORUS™ is built upon the established heritage of the RADARSAT program. A primary innovation of the new system is the implementation of a "tipping and cueing" technique. In this workflow, a broad area sensor first monitors a wide region to identify points of interest—the "tip"—which then triggers a trailing high-resolution sensor to zoom in on specific objects—the "cue."

This architecture is specifically engineered to enhance maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. By combining wide-area scanning with targeted high-resolution imaging, the system allows operators to maintain broad situational awareness while retaining the ability to identify specific targets with precision.

Impact on Maritime Intelligence

The deployment of CHORUS represents a shift in geointelligence through the introduction of Vessel Detection Onboard Processing (VDOP). Traditionally, raw signal data is transmitted to ground stations for analysis, creating a lag between data collection and actionable intelligence. VDOP allows the satellites to process raw data onboard, delivering near real-time maritime domain awareness directly to users at sea.

This onboard processing capability will significantly reduce the time required to get actionable information to mission-critical customers. For maritime security, this reduction in latency is critical for responding to illegal fishing, smuggling, and piracy, where the window for intervention is often narrow.

Future Outlook

With the control centre now operational, MDA Space moves into the final preparation phase for the 2026 launch window. Industry observers will be watching the integration of the VDOP system to see if it meets the promised latency reductions in live maritime environments. While the infrastructure is now in place in Québec, the full operational capacity of the constellation will not be realized until the satellites are in orbit and commercial operations commence in early 2027.
