Viet Nam and Australia Launch Science and Innovation Pact to Boost Tech Ties

Viet Nam and Australia have issued a Joint Statement to significantly deepen bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. Announced during a visit to Australia by General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm, the agreement leverages the complementary strengths of both nations to drive sustainable economic growth and resilience.
Central to the agreement is the launch of the Australia–Việt Nam Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Initiative (AVSTICI). This initiative facilitates joint research projects between universities, research institutions, and the private sector. Simultaneously, the two countries have commenced Phase II of the Australia–Việt Nam Strategic Technologies Centre (AVSTC), which targets critical and emerging technologies, with a primary focus on 5G and other enabling technologies.
To formalize their commitment to digital transformation, the two nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the Digital Economy. This framework extends to the governance of new technology, including the joint development of Guidelines for Responsible AI Usage. On the human capital front, Australia will continue its support for STEM scholarships in Viet Nam, while academic ties are being bolstered through university-to-university partnerships and PhD training conducted under Viet Nam's Project 89.
