NASA Abandons Rescue Mission for Swift Observatory After Spacecraft Failure

The rescue effort centered on the Lightweight In-Space Navigation and Kinematics (LINK) spacecraft, a $30 million project developed and operated by the private U.S. firm Katalyst Space Technologies. According to NASA, the mission collapsed after hardware malfunctions on July 28 caused the LINK spacecraft to spin out of control, resulting in only sporadic communications with ground control.

Launched in 2004, the Swift Observatory was designed to detect and study gamma-ray bursts, some of the most energetic explosions in the universe. Ghonhee Lee, CEO of Katalyst Space Technologies, stated that the company took on a "high-risk, high-reward challenge" on an aggressive timeline and expressed pride in the milestones achieved despite the ultimate failure.
