NASA Funds High-Risk Planetary Tools via PICASSO Program

NASA has expanded its portfolio of future planetary exploration tools through a series of new grants issued under the Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) program. The initiative focuses on funding high-risk, early-stage technology to ensure future missions possess the sensing capabilities required to analyze planetary compositions and detect biosignatures.

According to NASA Science, the program specifically targets ideas with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 1 to 3 on a standard 9-point scale. Recent activity includes the PICASSO23 cohort, which consists of 10 awards for technologies designed for diverse environments ranging from Mercury to the icy worlds of the outer solar system.
