Top Singaporean Chemist Lu Yixin to Join China's Eastern Institute of Technology

Lu Yixin, a prominent chemist and Provost’s Chair Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), will join the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in Ningbo, China, in January 2027. Lu is a fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science and president of the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry. His transition follows a similar high-profile move by K. Jimmy Hsia, a former vice-president of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), who joined EIT full-time in August 2026. Lu described the opportunity to help EIT grow into a world-class institution as a "meaningful challenge" that he could not refuse, according to the South China Morning Post.

Established in 2025, the Eastern Institute of Technology was fueled by a 30 billion yuan (US$4.4 billion) donation from semiconductor magnate Yu Renrong. This substantial private endowment is designed to accelerate the university's growth and its ability to attract global talent. Lu’s departure comes after more than two decades of contribution to Singapore's scientific community. He joined NUS in 2003 and attained the rank of full professor in 2014. His academic background includes a PhD from McGill University and research conducted under Nobel laureate Ryoji Noyori at Nagoya University.
His primary research focuses on asymmetric catalysis and synthesis. These fields are critical to the development of modern pharmaceuticals and the advancement of sustainable chemistry, making his expertise highly valuable for an institution looking to integrate basic science with industrial output.
