UAE Leads Global Satellite Network for Disaster Response

The UAE Space Agency assumed leadership of the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters from April 20 to October 19, 2026, coordinating a global network of satellite imagery and AI to support nations in crisis. This presidency marks a strategic shift for the UAE, moving from a participant to a primary coordinator in space-based humanitarian aid.

During its tenure, the UAE managed a sophisticated international system that provided free, timely geospatial data to authorized agencies worldwide. The effort was powered by an integrated national model that fused the capabilities of the UAE Space Agency, the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA), the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), and Space42. This collaboration leveraged AI and geospatial intelligence to accelerate the delivery of critical information during life-threatening scenarios.

A Global Infrastructure for Crisis

The International Charter is a global initiative comprising 17 member organizations dedicated to providing free satellite data during emergencies. To date, the Charter has conducted more than 1,168 activations, benefiting 146 different countries. This massive operation relies on a network of more than 270 satellites to monitor environmental changes and infrastructure damage in real-time.

Under UAE leadership in 2026, the network was activated for a diverse range of global emergencies. Support operations included managing mudflows and floods in Kyrgyzstan, monitoring volcanic activity in the Philippines, and coordinating cyclone response in Papua New Guinea. Additionally, the UAE-led effort provided earthquake assessments in Venezuela, flood recovery data for New Zealand, and response support for wildfires and flooding in Kazakhstan.
