This case centers on gallium nitride, a wide-bandgap semiconductor material significantly more efficient than traditional silicon. GaN technology is essential for high-efficiency power electronics and the rollout of 5G infrastructure. Because it handles higher voltages and temperatures, it is a critical component in electric vehicle chargers and advanced military radar systems.

BelGaN, the firm targeted in this alleged theft, specialized in these high-value semiconductors but has since fallen into financial ruin, filing for bankruptcy in July 2024. The timing of the suspect's activities suggests a calculated effort to extract value from the firm's intellectual property before its collapse.
