Asahi Linux Adds Official Support for Apple M3 Series Chips
The community-driven project now enables Linux on M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max hardware, though critical display and GPU features remain missing.
Asahi Linux officially merged support for Apple’s M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips into its installer on September 6, 2026. This milestone extends the project's reach to the latest generation of Apple Silicon, allowing users to run a full Linux environment on newer Mac hardware.
According to the Asahi Linux official blog, the installation is currently gated behind an "Expert mode" in the installer. While the M3 family is now supported, the Mac Studio featuring the M3 Ultra chip remains unsupported at this time. Despite the expert-level restriction, a significant amount of core hardware is already operational. Confirmed working components include WiFi, Bluetooth, internal microphones, and webcams. Additionally, the project has implemented hardware-accelerated video decoding, including support for the AV1 codec, and USB functionality is operational up to the hardware limit of USB 3 10 Gb/s.
The Road to Apple Silicon
Asahi Linux is a community-led effort focused on porting Linux to Apple Silicon. The project has spent years reverse-engineering Apple's proprietary architecture, building on the successful deployment of Linux on the M1 and M2 series. Because Apple does not provide official documentation or drivers for its hardware, the team must manually reconstruct the software interface required for the Linux kernel to communicate with the silicon.
Impact and Limitations
This expansion is a significant win for open-source flexibility and hardware longevity, as it prevents the latest Mac hardware from being locked exclusively to macOS. However, the current build is not yet a viable primary desktop replacement for power users. The absence of Display Controller Processor (DCP) support means external displays are not functional, and the lack of GPU drivers limits the system's capabilities. James Calligeros warned users not to expect "performant or power-efficient 3D acceleration right now."
What's Next
The project is now focused on refining the installation process and expanding driver support. The team aims to remove the "Expert mode" requirement for the general public in time for the Fedora Linux 45 beta release. Future updates will likely prioritize the missing GPU and display functionality to make the M3 port fully competitive with previous M-series iterations.
