China Localizes High-Purity Quartz for 300mm DRAM Fabrication
Jiangsu Pacific Quartz secures approval for domestic supply of fabrication consumables, though US-made crucibles remain a critical bottleneck.
China has achieved a key milestone in its semiconductor supply chain localization as Jiangsu Pacific Quartz secured approval to supply domestically refined, high-purity quartz for 300mm DRAM fabrication lines. This development allows Chinese memory chip manufacturers to integrate domestic quartz tubes into their production processes, reducing vulnerability to foreign supply chain disruptions during the fabrication stage.
The certification specifically applies to the quartz used in diffusion furnace tubes, which are essential consumables in the chipmaking process. Jiangsu Pacific Quartz's products are already utilized by major global semiconductor machinery suppliers, including Tokyo Electron and Lam Research. These consumables require high purity levels to ensure that the heat processes applied to silicon wafers do not introduce contaminants that could alter transistor electrical characteristics or lower production yields.
The Strategic Context
High-purity quartz is a critical material across the semiconductor ecosystem, but the industry distinguishes between the consumables used during the fabrication of wafers and the ultra-pure materials required to create the wafers themselves. China has been aggressively pursuing semiconductor independence to insulate its tech sector from geopolitical tensions and export controls, focusing on localizing every step of the manufacturing process from raw materials to final packaging.
While the localization of fabrication tubes is a significant win, it highlights the tiered nature of quartz purity requirements. The fabrication stage involves maintaining high purity to protect the wafer, but the initial creation of the silicon ingot requires an even more extreme level of purity to prevent defects at the atomic level.
The Remaining Bottleneck
Despite this progress, China remains strategically dependent on overseas suppliers for the most critical component: ultra-pure quartz crucibles. These crucibles are used to melt silicon and grow the ingots that are eventually sliced into wafers. This specific market is dominated by a near-monopoly of US-based suppliers located in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, specifically Sibelco and The Quartz Corp.
The inability to produce these crucibles domestically means that while China can now process 300mm DRAM wafers using domestic tubes, it still relies on American raw materials to create the silicon base. This creates a persistent strategic bottleneck, as the ultra-high purity standards required for crucibles exceed the capabilities of current domestic Chinese refining processes.
What's Next
Industry observers will now watch whether Jiangsu Pacific Quartz or other domestic firms can bridge the gap between fabrication-grade quartz and crucible-grade purity. Until China can replicate the unique geological and refining advantages of the Spruce Pine region, its quest for total semiconductor independence remains incomplete. The focus is expected to shift toward R&D for ultra-high purity synthesis to break the remaining US monopoly on silicon ingot growth.
