Florida Targets K-12 Students to Build Semiconductor Talent Pipeline

The Florida Semiconductor Institute is integrating microelectronics into primary and secondary education to fuel the state's independent tech expansion.

The Florida Semiconductor Institute (FSI) has launched two major educational initiatives to integrate semiconductor concepts into K-12 schooling. These programs aim to cultivate a local workforce capable of supporting Florida's aggressive expansion into the microelectronics sector.

To spark early interest, FSI introduced the 'Chip in Florida: K-12 Semiconductor Education Challenge' and the 'SemiClubs' program. During its inaugural year in 2025, the 'Chip in Florida' challenge engaged more than 12,000 students and 172 teachers across 29 Florida school districts. Palmer Trinity School was named the high school winner of the competition. Complementing the challenge, SemiClubs provides educators with resources to introduce semiconductor fundamentals through a mix of seminars, field trips, and hands-on activities.

A State-Driven Tech Strategy

Florida is positioning itself as a primary hub for the semiconductor industry, focusing on advanced packaging technologies for the medical, aerospace, and defense sectors. Unlike many state-level efforts that rely on federal support, Florida's push is largely independent of the federal CHIPS Act. The state has invested approximately $35 million in workforce education grants to ensure the infrastructure and human capital are in place to sustain this growth.

Expanding the Talent Pipeline

By targeting students at the K-12 level, Florida is attempting to lower the barrier to entry for a field often viewed as exclusively academic or laboratory-based. FSI emphasizes that semiconductor careers encompass a broad spectrum of roles, including research, development, and construction.

Dr. Roseanne Perez, a Workforce Development Program Specialist at FSI, noted that the industry is growing rapidly within the state and that initiatives like SemiClubs are essential for introducing students to these concepts early. Patrick Roberts, Head of School at Palmer Trinity School, added that being recognized as the high school winner affirms the role of STEM education as a catalyst for leadership and ethical innovation.

As Florida continues to build out the Florida Semiconductor Engine, the success of these K-12 programs will be a key metric in the state's ability to maintain a sustainable talent pipeline.
