South Korean equipment maker Hanmi Semiconductor is in final discussions to supply advanced packaging machinery for Terafab, Elon Musk's massive AI chip production hub in Austin, Texas. The move signals a strategic pivot for the Korean firm as it seeks to embed itself within Musk's vertically integrated AI ecosystem.
According to reports from Maeil Business Newspaper and ChosunBiz, Hanmi is negotiating the supply of TC bonders for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), MSVP cutting and inspection tools, and EMI shielding equipment. To solidify this partnership, Hanmi has invested 50 billion won (approximately $33 million) in SpaceX shares and is establishing a U.S.-based subsidiary, Hanmi USA, by the end of the year to support local supply chains. Hanmi joins another Korean firm, HPSP, which has already secured a purchase order for high-pressure hydrogen annealing equipment for the project's pilot facility.
A Shift in AI Infrastructure
Terafab represents a broader effort by Elon Musk to create a self-sufficient AI semiconductor supply chain to serve ventures including xAI, SpaceX, and Tesla. The project is staggering in scale, with an expected total investment of $119 billion (KRW 177 trillion). While South Korean equipment manufacturers have traditionally relied on established giants such as Samsung, SK hynix, and TSMC, Terafab marks a shift toward AI service companies directly building their own production and packaging ecosystems.
The Strategic Stakes
Securing a role in the initial stages of Terafab is viewed as a critical milestone. A semiconductor industry official noted that equipment adopted during the pilot stage is often kept in place when production shifts to mass manufacturing, making a pilot deal a "de facto entry ticket" to future mass production orders. For Hanmi and HPSP, success in Austin would mark a significant expansion into a non-traditional customer segment driven by the global AI infrastructure boom, reducing their dependence on traditional chipmakers.
Timeline and Outlook
Construction of the Terafab pilot line is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the facility targeting full-scale operations by 2028. Industry observers will be watching to see if Hanmi's final supply talks culminate in a formal agreement, as the outcome will determine the extent of South Korean influence in one of the world's most ambitious AI hardware projects.
