Magnetic Watch Bands Can Trick Laptops Into Sleeping

A common wearable accessory may be causing some laptop users to mistake magnetic interference for a critical hardware failure. When certain magnetic watch bands come into contact with a laptop's chassis, they can trick the system into believing the lid has been closed, instantly cutting the display and triggering the Windows lock screen.
In a recent discovery reported by Tom's Hardware, a reviewer found that the Acer Swift Go 16 AI was specifically susceptible to this interference. The reviewer noted that magnetic clasps on smartwatches, as well as fridge magnets and Qi 2 accessories, could trigger the laptop's lid sensor. This results in the screen going black and the system kicking the user to the lock screen during active typing—a behavior easily mistaken for a software conflict or a faulty motherboard.
The Mechanics of the Lid Sensor
Most modern laptops rely on a standard industry design to manage power states. They utilize Hall effect sensors—magnetic sensors embedded in the laptop deck—paired with magnets located in the lid bezel. When the lid is closed, the magnet aligns with the sensor, signaling the OS to enter sleep mode or turn off the display. While this system is efficient for power management, the sensors are vulnerable to any external magnetic field that mimics the lid's magnet.

This vulnerability creates a "ghost" hardware failure that can have tangible costs for the consumer.
