Elon Musk has announced the construction of "Terafab," a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas. The project represents a strategic move to vertically integrate the production of critical microchips for Musk's aerospace and automotive ventures.
Located approximately 70 to 75 miles northwest of Houston, the facility is a joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX with an estimated phase-one investment of $16.8 billion. Designed to be one of the largest buildings on earth by floor space, the plant is planned to cover 3,000 acres and feature more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space. Production targets are aggressive, with goals set at approximately one million wafer starts per month.
Strategic Infrastructure
To avoid the electrical grid backlogs that often delay large-scale industrial projects, Terafab will be powered primarily by natural gas and batteries. This "behind the meter" energy strategy allows the facility to bypass traditional grid constraints to ensure faster deployment and reliable power. This approach mirrors the energy infrastructure used for Musk's xAI data center in Memphis, prioritizing speed of construction over the use of Tesla solar panels.
