A computer enthusiast named Mark recently attempted to transform three fanless PCs, formerly used for Subway digital menu signage, into functional gaming machines. The experiment serves as a stark reminder of the limitations inherent in specialized industrial hardware when pushed beyond its intended purpose.

According to Tom's Hardware, the machines are low-power units powered by Intel Core i3 processors. The original hardware configuration was minimal, featuring 4GB of RAM—with only one slot occupied—and a 64GB SATA SSD. Upon acquisition, the devices were configured to boot directly into a kiosk mode designed specifically to display the Subway sandwich menu.

The Industrial Design Gap

Digital signage PCs are engineered for stability and low power consumption rather than raw processing power. In restaurant environments, these units utilize passive cooling to prevent the buildup of grease and dust and to eliminate the risk of mechanical fan failure. While this makes them ideal for displaying looping images of footlongs, it leaves them ill-equipped for the thermal and computational demands of 3D rendering.

Performance Realities

The results of the repurposing effort were poor, demonstrating a significant performance deficit. Benchmarks showed the machines could only muster 15 fps in GTA V and 25 fps in Minecraft. These figures fall well below the industry standard for a playable experience, illustrating that the passive cooling and low-spec components cannot handle the heavy lifting required by modern consumer titles.

The Hardware Divide

This project highlights the vast divide between industrial-grade stability and consumer-grade performance. While the hardware remains functional for its original purpose, the attempt to pivot to gaming confirms that without significant hardware overhauls, these kiosk units are destined to remain signage tools. The experiment underscores that specialized hardware is rarely a shortcut to a budget gaming setup, as the trade-off for industrial reliability is almost always raw speed.
