The rise of generative AI is fundamentally altering the structural collaboration of product teams, shifting the primary value of development from execution speed to human judgment. As the technical barriers to building prototypes drop, the industry is moving away from a focus on how fast a feature can be shipped toward a focus on whether that feature should exist at all.

Stavri Vasileiou, Head of Product at Silicon Dali, argues that AI is blurring the traditional boundaries between product management, design, and engineering. By reducing the distance between these roles, AI enables teams to test rough concepts and validate ideas much earlier in the cycle, bypassing the rigid, linear hand-off processes that once defined the industry. However, Vasileiou warns that this increased velocity comes with a risk: AI-generated output can create "noise," producing convincing prototypes for poorly understood problems that make progress appear more real than it actually is.

The End of the Linear Path

Traditionally, digital product development followed a predictable sequence: problem definition, requirements gathering, design, development, and user testing. In this model, disciplines were distinct, and the cost of execution acted as a natural filter for which ideas moved forward. While generative AI was initially viewed as a simple speed boost for writing documentation or generating code, its impact has proven to be more structural, collapsing the gap between the initial idea and a functional prototype.

The Premium on Judgment

As the time and cost associated with execution trend toward zero, the competitive advantage for companies is shifting. When the act of building becomes easy, the ability to exercise sound judgment—knowing exactly what is worth building—becomes the critical differentiator. This shift necessitates a change in how companies approach talent acquisition, favoring multidisciplinary curiosity and the ability to critically challenge AI-generated output over pure technical execution skills. As Vasileiou puts it, "Polish is not evidence and output is not progress."

Redefining the Product Role

This evolution is redefining the core responsibilities of the product manager. The role is shifting from the granular design of user paths, such as specific screens and flows, to the high-level design of the rules, trust, and boundaries of AI-driven systems. In this new paradigm, product leaders are tasked with managing the systems that handle the steps between a user's intention and the final outcome, rather than mapping every single click.

What to Watch

As teams integrate these AI-driven workflows, the industry must now determine how to measure actual progress in an environment where high-fidelity prototypes can be generated instantly. The challenge remains in distinguishing between the "noise" of rapid output and the genuine validation of a product's value proposition. Whether this shift leads to a permanent merger of product, design, and engineering roles remains to be seen, but the emphasis on judgment over execution is already taking hold.
