Google and Blackstone's AI Infrastructure Venture Hit by Severe Site Delays
Project Braid faces a plummeting on-time delivery rate as power shortages and regulatory freezes stall the rollout of TPU-powered data centers.
Alphabet Inc. and Blackstone Inc. are facing significant setbacks in their joint effort to build a massive AI infrastructure network. The venture, known internally as Project Braid, is struggling to secure the data center sites necessary to host Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), threatening the timeline for a critical piece of AI hardware scaling.
Launched with an initial $5 billion equity commitment from Blackstone, Project Braid aims to bring 500 megawatts (MW) of capacity online by 2027. The goal is to provide "compute-as-a-service," allowing AI customers to lease high-performance computing power. However, the project has encountered a series of physical and political bottlenecks. These include a regulatory freeze on new projects in Texas and critical equipment shortages, specifically for transformers, which have become a primary point of failure in the supply chain.
The Infrastructure Wall
These delays have led to a dramatic shift in internal confidence. Executives involved in the project now estimate that data center projects have only a 50% probability of meeting their delivery dates—a sharp decline from the 90% probability estimated three years ago.
Specific failures have already emerged in the project's footprint. Google scrapped a plan with developer Crusoe to build sites in Cheyenne, Wyoming, after losing confidence in the developer's ability to deliver. Google is now in the process of reapplying for permits for those sites independently. Despite these hurdles, Benjamin Treynor Sloss, CEO of Project Braid, stated that it is common for individual sites to progress at different rates and that the venture is making "strong progress" by utilizing a "diversified set of options."
Strategic Implications
For Google, Project Braid is more than a real estate play; it is a strategic move to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market. By expanding the ecosystem for its proprietary TPUs, Google can scale the hardware required to power its Gemini AI models.
Furthermore, the partnership allows Google to shift significant capital expenditures and financial risks off its own balance sheet. By leveraging Blackstone's financing capabilities through its BXN1 AI investment division, the two companies are pioneering a "neocloud" model. This approach allows them to deploy massive amounts of compute capacity without Google bearing the full brunt of the infrastructure costs.

The struggles of Project Braid highlight a growing trend across the AI industry: the transition from software breakthroughs to physical limitations. The plummeting delivery probability reflects a broader industry wall characterized by power shortages, long equipment lead times, and increasing political opposition to data center expansion.
