Amazon Adds 10,000 Rivian Electric Vans in Six-Month Push
The e-commerce giant expands its zero-emission fleet to over 40,000 Rivian vehicles as it pursues a 2030 sustainability target.
Amazon significantly accelerated its electrification efforts in the first half of 2026, adding 10,000 custom Rivian electric delivery vans to its fleet. This rapid expansion underscores the company's commitment to transforming its last-mile logistics infrastructure.
According to reports from InsideEVs and Yahoo Autos, the addition of 10,000 vehicles represents a 33% increase compared to the end of 2025, when the fleet stood at over 30,000. Amazon now operates more than 40,000 Rivian electric delivery vehicles (EDVs) globally. These vans constitute 80% of Amazon's total global electric delivery van fleet, which currently exceeds 50,000 battery-powered vehicles. An Amazon spokesperson stated, "We are proud to have integrated 10,000 Rivian electric vans into our delivery network over the past six months, supporting our sustainability goals."
The Path to 100,000
The partnership between the two companies began in 2019 with a strategic agreement to develop a custom vehicle tailored for the rigors of delivery logistics. While the initial exclusivity period ended in 2023—allowing Rivian to market its commercial vans to other enterprises—the relationship remains a cornerstone of Amazon's operational strategy. This collaboration has enabled Rivian to scale production at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, helping the automaker establish a strong foothold in the U.S. commercial EV market against rivals like Mercedes-Benz and Ford.
Industry Implications
This deployment validates the scalability of custom-built electric vehicles for massive, high-frequency logistics operations. For Rivian, steady demand from Amazon provides a critical, stable revenue stream that allows the company to balance commercial growth with the development of consumer-facing models, such as the R2. For the broader industry, the move signals that the transition to electric fleets is moving past the pilot phase and into full-scale operational integration.
Future Outlook
The current surge is part of a broader, long-term objective established in the original 2019 agreement: to have 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road by 2030. As Amazon continues to pursue its "Climate Pledge" sustainability goals, the industry will be watching to see if the company can maintain this pace of deployment to meet its decade-end target.
