BYD Launches Ti 7 in UK, Undercutting Land Rover Defender by £16,320
The Chinese automaker's first seven-seat SUV for the UK market pairs a rugged aesthetic with a high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain.
BYD has opened orders for the Ti 7, its first seven-seat SUV destined for the UK and European markets. The launch marks a strategic push by the Chinese manufacturer to penetrate the high-margin luxury SUV segment with a vehicle that blends a boxy, rugged aesthetic with advanced hybrid technology.
The Ti 7 enters the UK market with a starting price of £47,995, positioning it as a direct and significantly more affordable alternative to established luxury off-roaders. Specifically, the Ti 7 is £16,320 cheaper than the Land Rover Defender 110 PHEV, which starts at £71,840. Available exclusively in the 'Excellence AWD' trim, the vehicle comes equipped with a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, an 18-speaker sound system, and a built-in refrigerator.
Under the hood, the Ti 7 utilizes a DM-p (Dual Mode performance) powertrain. This system pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with electric motors to produce 402 hp (408 PS), allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds.
Efficiency is a primary focal point for the new model. The Ti 7 offers a pure-electric range of up to 74 miles according to WLTP standards, more than doubling the 31.1-mile electric range provided by the Defender PHEV. BYD claims this combination of pricing and features provides a level of equipment that exceeds anything rivals can offer at this price point.
This move represents a calculated expansion for BYD as it moves beyond smaller electric vehicles, such as the Atto 3, into larger, more profitable segments. By mirroring the design language of icons like the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser, BYD is challenging the perceived value proposition of European luxury brands in their own home markets. The Ti 7 aims to attract families and luxury buyers by offering superior acceleration and electric range at a fraction of the cost of traditional premium alternatives.
While orders are now open, buyers will have to wait for the vehicle to arrive on roads. Customer deliveries in the UK are expected to begin in January 2027. Potential owners can currently secure their units as BYD prepares to scale its presence in the European luxury SUV landscape.
