BYD Unveils Qin Max Sedan With Nine-Minute Flash-Charging
The B-segment sedan features roof-mounted LiDAR and ultra-fast charging to reclaim mid-range market share.
BYD has unveiled the specifications and images for the Qin Max, a high-specification B-segment sedan designed to anchor the top end of the Qin family. The vehicle is scheduled for an official launch in China on August 13, 2026, though units have already begun arriving at dealerships.
Positioned as a "completely different new B-segment fast-charging sedan," the Qin Max is available in both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations. The BEV model is headlined by "flash-charging" technology, which BYD claims can propel a battery from 10% to 97% capacity in just nine minutes. For the BEV powertrain, buyers can choose between a 120 kW motor paired with a 52.868 kWh LFP battery (offering 530 km CLTC range) or a more powerful 240 kW motor with a 64.315 kWh battery (offering 630 km CLTC range). The PHEV DM-i variant combines a 74 kW 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with a 175 kW electric motor.
Strategic Market Positioning
The Qin Max arrives during a volatile period for BYD's sedan portfolio. While the Qin series has historically been a cornerstone of the company's success, the Qin Plus and Qin L models experienced significant sales declines during the first half of 2026. According to Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty Network sales division, the Qin Max is specifically designed to fill a gap in the mid-range lineup, sitting above the Qin L to target younger buyers and reclaim lost ground in the highly competitive RMB 100,000 to 200,000 price segment.
Technology and Hardware
To compete with rivals like Geely Galaxy and Changan Nevo, BYD is pivoting toward higher-spec hardware. The Qin Max features a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and the DiPilot 300 assisted driving system, also known as "God's Eye B." Physically, the sedan measures 4,866 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height, supported by a 2,820 mm wheelbase.
Industry Implications
This launch signals a broader shift in BYD's strategy: moving away from basic volume plays toward technology-driven offerings. By integrating LiDAR and ultra-fast charging into a B-segment vehicle, BYD is attempting to stabilize its volume sales by bridging the gap between the entry-level Qin L and the premium Han series. This move reflects a response to shifting consumer preferences in China, where advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and charging speed have become primary purchase drivers.
