China's EV Race Shifts to Seconds as Charging Times Drop Below Five Minutes

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers and battery developers have entered a new competitive phase where charging speeds are now measured and marketed in seconds rather than minutes. This shift marks a strategic effort to eliminate range anxiety by making the EV charging experience nearly identical to a traditional gas station stop.

Recent breakthroughs have pushed 10-70% charging times below the five-minute threshold. Geely's 'Energee Golden Brick' battery can charge from 10% to 70% in 4 minutes and 22 seconds, reaching 97% in 8 minutes and 42 seconds. Pushing the boundary further, FAW Group's Hongqi brand has developed a battery prototype capable of a 10-70% charge in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds. Meanwhile, BYD's Blade Battery 2.0 has emerged as one of the few ultra-fast technologies currently deployed across multiple mass-produced models, achieving a 10-70% charge in approximately 5 minutes.

The Evolution of Fast Charging

For years, the global EV industry benchmark for 'fast charging' was defined by 15- to 30-minute windows for a significant power increase. As battery chemistry—particularly lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and high-voltage architectures—and charging infrastructure improved, the industry target shifted toward sub-15-minute windows. The current trend in China represents the final push toward parity with internal combustion engine (ICE) refueling times. By moving the goalposts from minutes to specific second-counts, manufacturers are now using precise velocity metrics to differentiate their premium technology in an increasingly crowded market.

Redefining the Adoption Barrier

This transition signals that raw battery capacity is no longer the sole primary battleground for manufacturers; charging velocity has become a critical product differentiator. By reducing the time spent at a charger to under five minutes, companies can effectively neutralize the primary psychological barrier to EV adoption: charging downtime. As these technologies scale, the ability to recover the majority of a battery's range in the time it takes to buy a coffee could accelerate the global transition away from gasoline vehicles by removing the perceived inconvenience of electric propulsion.

The Road Ahead

While prototype speeds from brands like Hongqi show the theoretical ceiling of current chemistry, the industry must now focus on the scalability of the supporting infrastructure. The next phase of competition will likely center on whether the power grid and charging stations can consistently deliver the massive currents required to hit these sub-five-minute marks in real-world conditions. Observers will be watching to see which of these second-based metrics move from prototypes to standard equipment across mass-market fleets.
