Eolian Starts Construction on PJM's Largest Battery Storage Project in Ohio

The 1.06 GWh Flint Grid facility aims to stabilize the regional grid amid surging demand from AI and data centers.

Eolian has begun construction on the Flint Grid project, a massive battery energy storage system (BESS) in Licking County, Ohio. The facility is designed to provide critical reliability to the PJM interconnection, marking a significant shift in how the region manages peak electricity demand.

Located on approximately 15 acres along Jug Street Road in Jersey Township, the system will deliver 200 MW of power with a total capacity of 1.06 GWh, allowing for roughly 5.3 hours of discharge. The facility is the first grid-scale battery project permitted by the Ohio Power Siting Board. It has also achieved a market milestone as the first large-scale battery to qualify for PJM's capacity market and the largest to clear the 2027/28 Residual Capacity Auction. Commercial operations are expected to commence before the 2027-2028 PJM capacity year.

Strategic Grid Support

The project is situated near New Albany's industrial corridor, a region seeing a rapid expansion of data centers from tech giants including Google, Meta, and Amazon Web Services. This surge in electricity consumption has placed significant strain on the local grid. The PJM Interconnection, which oversees the grid for 13 states and the District of Columbia, utilizes a capacity market to compensate resources that can ensure stability during periods of peak demand.

Industry Implications

By deploying large-scale BESS, grid operators can unlock existing transmission capacity and mitigate price volatility for consumers without the delays associated with long-term physical infrastructure upgrades. Eolian founder and CEO Aaron Zubaty noted that while there is significant concern regarding the scaling of infrastructure to meet electricity demand, there is insufficient discussion on using existing technology to unlock "wasted capacity that already exists on the grid."

Market Outlook

The success of the Flint Grid project in the PJM capacity auction signals a growing financial viability and acceptance of batteries as primary reliability assets in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. As AI-driven power demands continue to climb, the industry will be watching whether this model of rapid, battery-led stabilization can keep pace with the growth of the data center corridor.
