Fortescue CEO Test-Drives Electric Mining Fleet in China Push

Fortescue CEO Dino Otranto traveled to Xuzhou, China, this week to test-drive the company's next-generation battery-electric mining equipment, a key step in decarbonizing the Australian iron ore producer's Pilbara operations.

Otranto drove a 150-tonne battery-powered water truck (XCMG XDE150ES) alongside electric dozers, graders, and wheel loaders from Chinese manufacturer XCMG. The prototypes will deploy at Fortescue's Western Australia sites as part of its plan to eliminate Scope 1 and 2 terrestrial emissions from Pilbara iron ore operations by 2030.

The Scale of the Transition

Fortescue plans to deploy 300 to 400 giant 240-tonne electric haul trucks across its operations, with XCMG supplying up to half the fleet and German manufacturer Liebherr providing the remainder. Fortescue Zero has developed 6 MW fast chargers in-house to support the electric fleet's charging infrastructure.

The transition to electric haul trucks could save Fortescue between $300 million and $400 million in fuel costs annually, according to analyst estimates. The company already operates 16 electric excavators, each saving approximately one million litres of diesel per year. Around half of Fortescue's 70-strong excavator fleet is expected to be electric by the end of 2026.

"Very Smooth"

Otranto described the experience as "very smooth." "We're moving rapidly to decarbonize our Pilbara iron ore operations and eliminate our Scope 1 and 2 terrestrial emissions by 2030," he said.

The initiative ranks among the largest electrification efforts in global mining. Fortescue is simultaneously investing in renewable energy infrastructure, including solar and wind projects, to power Pilbara operations with green electricity.

A Test Case for Heavy Industry

The Pilbara presents one of the world's harshest operating environments for mining equipment, with extreme temperatures and demanding duty cycles. Replacing hundreds of ultra-class diesel machines with battery-electric alternatives would demonstrate the technical feasibility of decarbonizing heavy industry at scale.

Fortescue's "Real Zero" target goes beyond many competitors' net-zero commitments by focusing on actual elimination of terrestrial emissions rather than relying on offsets. The company's in-house development of charging infrastructure and partnerships with multiple equipment manufacturers suggest a comprehensive approach.

The prototypes tested in Xuzhou are expected to arrive in the Pilbara for operational trials, though sources differ on whether deployment begins in late 2025 or 2026. Regardless of timeline, Fortescue's progress will be closely watched by mining operators worldwide as the industry grapples with decarbonization pressure from investors and regulators.
