Two electric SUVs with identical EPA efficiency ratings deliver dramatically different real-world energy consumption, according to independent side-by-side testing that exposes limitations in federal rating methodology.
The Rivian R2 Performance and Tesla Model Y Performance both carry official EPA ratings of 105 MPGe combined (32 kWh per 100 miles). Yet controlled testing by Out of Spec Reviews and RivianTrackr found the R2 consuming 18% to 26% more energy across steady-state speeds from 50 to 80 mph, with approximately 25% higher consumption during low-speed stop-and-go simulation.
Testing Reveals Wide Disparity
The discrepancy emerged during highway testing where both vehicles were driven at identical speeds under comparable conditions. At 50 mph, the R2 used roughly 18% more energy than the Model Y. That gap widened to approximately 26% at 60 mph, narrowed to around 20% at 70 mph, and reached 26.5% at 80 mph, according to InsideEVs coverage of the test results.
The stop-and-go simulation, designed to replicate urban driving patterns, showed the R2 consuming about 25% more energy despite its mechanical front motor disconnect feature—a cruising efficiency technology the Tesla lacks.
Physical Differences Drive Consumption
The efficiency gap reflects fundamental design differences between the two vehicles. The R2 weighs approximately 4,850 to 5,250 pounds compared to the Model Y Performance's 4,480 pounds. The Rivian also features a boxier profile optimized for off-road capability with 9.6 inches of ground clearance versus 6.0 inches for the Tesla, creating additional aerodynamic drag at highway speeds.
Despite higher energy consumption, the R2 achieves 330 miles of EPA-rated range compared to 306 miles for the Model Y Performance, reflecting its larger battery capacity.
EPA Methodology Questions
The identical MPGe ratings despite divergent real-world performance raise questions about EPA testing methodology. Test hosts speculated the R2 may have undergone a full five-cycle EPA test while the Model Y's rating could have been derived from shorter tests with EPA correction factors, though this explanation remains unconfirmed without official EPA documentation.
The results demonstrate that matching EPA efficiency figures can mask substantial differences in actual energy consumption depending on vehicle design, weight, and aerodynamics. For buyers comparing electric vehicles on efficiency alone, the findings suggest official ratings provide an incomplete picture of real-world operating costs and energy use.
