LKAB Deploys Scania Electric Haul Trucks 4,000 Feet Underground
Swedish mining giant tests heavy-duty battery-electric vehicles to decarbonize deep-surface iron ore operations.
Swedish mining company LKAB has deployed two customized battery-electric Scania haul trucks at its Malmberget iron ore mine. The move marks a significant step in the company's transition toward sustainable underground logistics.
Operating at depths of up to 1,250 meters—approximately 4,000 feet—the trucks have already transported more than 100,000 tonnes of iron ore. According to Scania, the vehicles feature a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 120 tonnes and a payload capacity of just over 70 tonnes. Each truck is powered by 624 kWh lithium-ion batteries, which have demonstrated roughly seven hours of operation per charge. To maintain this cycle, the trucks utilize CCS connectors for charging at speeds up to 375 kW, with a full shift's charge requiring approximately 80 minutes. In terms of productivity, the vehicles can move about 3,200 tonnes of material per charge, typically covering around 45 trips.
The Push for Electrification
LKAB is aggressively pursuing the electrification of its mobile machinery to improve safety and sustainability. The Malmberget deployment is part of a broader corporate strategy to electrify 30% of the company's mining fleet by 2027. This project was developed through a close partnership with Scania to adapt heavy vocational battery-electric vehicle (BEV) architecture for the extreme demands of deep-surface mining. Peter Gustavsson, Project Manager for Electrification of Mobile Machines at LKAB, noted that the trucks were customized specifically for the mine's needs through this collaboration.
Industrial Implications
Replacing diesel engines with electric powertrains in deep underground environments provides immediate operational advantages. By eliminating exhaust fumes, LKAB significantly reduces the energy and infrastructure required for ventilation systems. Additionally, the shift reduces operational noise, creating a safer and more manageable working environment for personnel. This deployment serves as a proof of concept that high-capacity battery systems can withstand the rigorous duty cycles and extreme pressures of industrial mining.
Future Outlook
As LKAB continues to scale its electric fleet, the industry will be watching how these battery systems perform over longer lifecycles in high-stress environments. While the initial 100,000-tonne milestone proves basic viability, the long-term goal remains the broader 2027 electrification target. Further data on the total cost of ownership and maintenance compared to traditional diesel haulage will be critical in determining if this model can be replicated across other deep-surface mines globally.
