Mercedes-Benz GLA Electric Leaks Ahead of July 29 Debut
The entry-level luxury SUV drops the EQ prefix, brings 800V architecture and 400 miles of range to the MMA platform.
Leaked images via Cochespias reveal the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA Electric one day before its July 29 debut, confirming the smallest SUV in the German automaker's lineup will abandon the EQA name in favor of appending "Electric" to its existing model designation.
The GLA Electric rides on Mercedes' Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, sharing underpinnings with the recently unveiled CLA Electric. The architecture enables an 800V electrical system and an 85 kWh NMC battery pack that Mercedes expects will deliver at least 400 miles of range on the WLTP cycle.
Two Powertrain Options
The GLA Electric will launch in two variants mirroring the CLA's powertrain structure: a 250+ model with rear-wheel drive producing 268 horsepower, and a 350 4MATIC with all-wheel drive making 349 horsepower. This dual-option approach gives buyers a clear efficiency-versus-performance choice at the entry level.
Interior and Infotainment
Inside, the GLA Electric is expected to feature a 14-inch central infotainment screen, a 10.24-inch digital driver cluster, and an optional 14-inch passenger display. The system runs MBUX with AI integration from Microsoft, including Microsoft 365 Copilot for in-car productivity features.
Why the Naming Shift Matters
The move from "EQA" to "GLA Electric" signals Mercedes-Benz's broader strategy to streamline its electric vehicle branding. Rather than maintaining a separate EQ sub-brand, the company is appending "Electric" to existing model names across the refreshed GLC, GLB, and now GLA lineup. The approach aims to reduce consumer confusion while retaining the brand equity of established nameplates.
Competitive Positioning
At 400-plus miles of range, the GLA Electric targets the entry-level luxury electric SUV segment currently occupied by the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. The 800V architecture—typically reserved for higher-end EVs—gives the GLA a charging speed advantage over rivals still operating on 400V systems. As Mercedes' most affordable SUV, the GLA Electric represents the brand's push to make premium electric mobility accessible without sacrificing technical sophistication.
