Saft to Supply Lithium-Ion Batteries for French Barracuda, Scorpène Submarines

TotalEnergies subsidiary signs major Naval Group contract to replace Cold War-era lead-acid technology with next-gen Li-ion systems.

French defense contractor Naval Group has selected Saft, the TotalEnergies-owned battery specialist, to supply next-generation lithium-ion battery systems for its Barracuda and Scorpène submarine families. The agreement marks a decisive shift away from the lead-acid technology that has powered conventional submarine operations since the Cold War.

Energy Density Leap

While nuclear reactors provide primary propulsion, submarines depend on massive battery banks for silent running, rapid power delivery, and emergency life-support systems. Saft's lithium-ion systems deliver substantially higher energy density than legacy lead-acid batteries.

The upgrade targets three operational priorities: extended underwater endurance, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced performance during submerged missions. The transition represents one of the most significant propulsion-system modernizations in European naval defense in decades.

Strategic Sovereignty

Beyond performance gains, the partnership carries geopolitical weight. Both Saft and Naval Group frame the contract as a critical step toward European industrial and technological sovereignty in underwater defense capabilities, reducing reliance on non-European suppliers for critical naval systems.

Cedric Duclos, CEO of Saft, called the deal evidence that battery technology now determines submarine effectiveness. "This contract confirms that advanced battery technology is now a defining factor in submarine performance," Duclos said. "Our Li-ion systems set a new standard in energy density, safety and reliability, positioning Saft at the heart of next-generation naval defense programs."

Cold War Technology Retired

Lead-acid batteries have served as the submarine standard for more than half a century. The technology, while proven, carries inherent limitations in weight, footprint, and charge-discharge efficiency compared to modern lithium-ion alternatives.

The Barracuda-class nuclear attack submarines form the backbone of the French Navy's undersea fleet, while Scorpène conventional submarines operate with multiple export customers worldwide. Both platforms will receive the upgraded battery systems under the multi-year agreement.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
