Volkswagen Notches 70,000 Orders for Affordable EV Family Before Full Lineup Arrives

Strong European demand for sub-€25,000 electric cars validates VW's pivot to entry-level market as ID. Polo leads reservations.

Volkswagen Group has secured more than 70,000 orders across Europe for its Electric Urban Car Family, a milestone reached before the fourth model even opened for bookings. The figure, announced in the automaker's Half-Yearly Financial Report on July 24, 2026, signals robust appetite for affordable electric vehicles as the German group races to defend market share against lower-cost Chinese rivals.

ID. Polo Drives Early Momentum

The Volkswagen ID. Polo alone generated approximately 25,000 reservations, making it the strongest performer in the quartet. The remaining orders were split among the Škoda Epiq, CUPRA Raval, and the newly available ID. Cross, which began accepting orders on July 15. Just two weeks earlier, on July 10, Volkswagen had reported 54,000 orders with only three models available, indicating the ID. Cross added roughly 16,000 reservations in its first days.

All four vehicles share the MEB+ platform and are manufactured at Volkswagen's Spanish facilities, a consolidation strategy designed to maximize economies of scale. The lineup targets the budget EV segment, positioning it directly against Chinese manufacturers that have been gaining traction in European markets.

Battery Technology Borrowed from China

A key enabler of the aggressive pricing is cell-to-pack battery architecture, an approach pioneered by Chinese battery makers and now deployed in Europe through Volkswagen's Unified Cell program. The technology, developed in partnership with PowerCo and Chinese manufacturers including Gotion High-Tech, eliminates traditional battery modules to reduce cost and weight while improving pack density.

This marks a strategic reversal for Volkswagen, which spent years developing its own modular battery systems before embracing designs that Chinese competitors had already brought to mass production. The shift underscores the pressure European automakers face to match the cost structures of rivals like BYD and MG.

Validation for Entry-Level Strategy

The order volume validates Volkswagen's pivot away from a premium-only EV strategy. For years, the group's electric push centered on higher-margin models like the ID.4 and ID.7, but rising competition and slower-than-expected EV adoption in the mass market forced a recalibration. The Electric Urban Car Family represents Volkswagen's bet that affordable options, not just premium crossovers, are essential to meeting European electrification targets.

Analysts note that the 70,000-order figure, while significant, still represents a fraction of Volkswagen's total European sales volume. The real test will come when production ramps up and delivery times are confirmed. Volkswagen has not yet disclosed when the first customer vehicles will arrive, though Spanish production lines are expected to reach full capacity in 2027.

If conversion rates hold and manufacturing scales as planned, the Electric Urban Car Family could become Volkswagen's highest-volume EV program, finally delivering the mass-market breakthrough the group has sought since launching its ID subbrand.
