Android phone seized from rape convict Prajwal Revanna in Bengaluru jail

Authorities seized an Android smartphone and other prohibited items from the cell of convicted rapist and former MP Prajwal Revanna during a surprise raid in Bengaluru. The operation, conducted on August 11, 2026, has triggered a crackdown on prison security and the suspension of jail officials.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) carried out the raid at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison between 2:05 PM and 9:00 PM. Officers searching Room No 4 in Security Section 3 recovered a light blue Redmi 5G mobile phone, a white charger, a black SanDisk pen drive, and a blue pocket notebook. Investigators found the device contained password-protected applications, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, and Prime Video.

Following the discovery, an FIR was registered against Revanna and another inmate, Prathap Rai, under Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons (Amendment) Act-2022 and Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The state government responded swiftly to the breach; Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge ordered strict action against both the inmates and the staff on duty. Consequently, a prison official was suspended for dereliction of duty.

The incident raises significant questions regarding the treatment of high-profile prisoners within the Karnataka penal system. Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2025 following a series of sexual assault convictions. Minister Kharge emphasized that the status of an inmate should not grant them immunity from prison rules. The minister framed the suspensions as a necessary message to both the prison administration and the inmate population that preferential treatment will not be overlooked.
