Bhilwara Police Recover 281 Stolen Phones via CEIR Portal
Digital tracking through the Sanchar Saathi ecosystem has helped Rajasthan authorities return hundreds of devices to their owners.
Bhilwara Police have recovered 281 lost or stolen mobile phones over a three-month period, utilizing the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal and the Sanchar Saathi app. The operation underscores a growing reliance on centralized digital tools to combat device theft and restore personal property to citizens.
The recovered devices were returned to their rightful owners, with some handsets handed over directly by SP Sagar Rana. According to police data, the district's overall success rate is significant; to date, authorities have recovered 2,005 phones out of 2,709 registered trace requests. SP Sagar Rana noted that the system has been instrumental in helping police trace and recover lost devices.
The Digital Tracking Framework
The Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) is a government initiative launched by India's Department of Telecommunications. The portal allows citizens to report lost or stolen handsets and block them using the unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. By blocking the IMEI, the device is rendered useless to thieves, as it cannot be used on any network within the country.
When a new SIM card is inserted into a blocked device, the system triggers an alert, allowing law enforcement to track the hardware's location. This integration between the Sanchar Saathi app and police databases creates a streamlined pipeline for reporting and recovery that removes much of the manual legwork previously required for hardware tracking.
