Chrome for Android adds custom backgrounds to New Tab page

Google is introducing a new Appearance menu for Chrome on Android, allowing users to personalize the visual layout of their New Tab page. The update marks a shift toward greater aesthetic control for mobile users, who previously had limited options for modifying the browser's landing screen.

Rolling out as part of Chrome for Android version 151.0.7922.71, the update introduces several customization paths. According to SammyGuru, users can now choose from "Chrome Default," upload their own images, select from "Chrome Colors," or browse curated "Theme Collections." These collections are organized into specific categories, including Landscape, Architecture, Earth, Patterns, Illustrations, and Gradients. To keep the interface dynamic, Google has included a "daily refresh" toggle for both the color presets and theme collections, which automatically rotates the background image every 24 hours.

Closing the mobile-desktop gap

Until now, visual customization of the New Tab page was primarily a feature reserved for the desktop version of Chrome. On Android, users were limited to managing functional elements, such as organizing site icons, adjusting page cards, or toggling the Discover feed. While the utility of the page remained high, the ability to change the actual backdrop of the browsing experience was absent from the mobile ecosystem.

Why personalization matters

This update brings significant parity between the mobile and desktop Chrome experiences. By allowing users to upload personal photos or select curated art, Google is attempting to make the browser feel more personal and less like a generic utility. In a competitive mobile browser market, these small quality-of-life improvements help increase user engagement by transforming a functional tool into a personalized digital space.

What to watch

As the feature is rolling out gradually, users who have updated to version 151.0.7922.71 but do not yet see the Appearance menu may need to wait for the server-side switch to activate. It remains to be seen if Google will expand these customization options to include more interactive elements or integrate them further with other Google account personalization settings.
