Dolby Vision 2 Launches to Bridge HDR Hardware Gap
The next-generation image engine introduces 'Content Intelligence' and a tiered system to optimize high-end TV hardware.
Dolby Laboratories has launched Dolby Vision 2, a next-generation HDR image engine designed to better leverage the capabilities of modern television hardware. The update aims to automate the calibration process for consumers while providing advanced tools for professional enthusiasts.
At the center of the update is a new suite called "Content Intelligence." This system includes Precision Black to enhance shadow detail and Light Sense, which allows the TV to calibrate brightness based on ambient room lighting. Additionally, the engine includes dedicated optimizations for gaming and sports to ensure fluid, high-contrast visuals across different genres of content. According to John Couling, Dolby’s Senior Vice President of Entertainment, the industry has reached an "inflection point" where TV technology has evolved dramatically while artists continue to demand more innovative tools.
A Tiered Approach to Hardware
To accommodate the wide variety of display technologies on the market, Dolby has split the format into two distinct tiers. A base tier is designed for mainstream televisions, ensuring a consistent HDR experience across a broad range of devices. For high-end sets, the company has introduced "Dolby Vision 2 Max." This premium tier adds "Authentic Motion" capabilities and a set of "Pro" manual settings, allowing power users to fine-tune the image to their exact preferences.
Support for the new standard is rolling out across 2026 TV lineups. Hisense has already begun deploying the update to its 2026 models, including the UR9. TP Vision’s 2026 Philips OLED lineup and TCL’s 2026 X QD-Mini LED and C Series are also confirmed to support the format, with TCL providing support via future software updates.
Closing the Calibration Gap
For a decade, Dolby Vision has relied on dynamic metadata to guide HDR performance, but a persistent gap has remained between a TV's theoretical peak brightness and the actual viewing experience. This discrepancy is often caused by poor user calibration or mismatched lighting in the viewing environment. By automating cinematic motion and brightness adjustments, Dolby Vision 2 attempts to standardize high-end picture quality without requiring the user to navigate complex settings menus.
The Path to Adoption
While hardware support is the first step, the format requires content delivery to be effective. Several major streaming platforms have already committed to the upgrade. Peacock, CANAL+, and iQIYI have pledged to deliver Dolby Vision 2 content to their subscribers, signaling a coordinated push to move beyond the limitations of static HDR10 and first-generation Dolby Vision.
Industry observers will now be watching to see how quickly other major streaming giants adopt the standard and whether the "Max" tier creates a significant divide in the perceived quality of the 2026 TV market.
