Google adds Gemini voice shortcuts to macOS 'fn' key
A system-wide update allows Mac users to trigger Gemini via the Function key for screen-aware AI commands.
Google has introduced a system-wide voice shortcut for its Gemini app on macOS, allowing users to activate the AI by long-pressing the 'fn' key. This integration transforms the AI from a standalone application into a system-level input method capable of interacting with other open software.
Known as 'Speak to Window,' the feature is currently rolling out to English-speaking Gemini users on macOS. Users can now talk to the chatbot from any active window by holding the 'fn' button—which also serves as the Globe key on newer Mac hardware—located at the bottom left of the keyboard. The tool includes a polished transcription system that automatically strips filler words such as 'ums' and 'ahs' from the user's speech.
Beyond simple dictation, the update introduces opt-in 'screen-aware reasoning.' This capability allows Gemini to see and understand the contents of active windows, enabling the AI to perform complex tasks such as drafting emails based on open notes or summarizing text highlighted within a PDF. To utilize these features, the app requires a MacBook with Apple Silicon and macOS Sequoia 15 or later, as part of Gemini for Mac version 1.88.
The Shift to System-Level AI
This update follows a rapid expansion of Google's presence on Apple hardware. Google launched its native Gemini app for macOS in April 2026, followed by the June 2026 introduction of 'Spark,' an agentic AI capable of creating documents and spreadsheets. By moving from a destination app to a system-level shortcut, Google is attempting to establish Gemini as the primary AI layer for Mac users, removing the friction of switching between windows to access LLM capabilities.
