Google replaces Pixel Pro temperature sensor with 'HiLight' notification LED
The Pixel 11 Pro swaps a niche thermometer for a color-coded LED to improve glanceability.
Google has officially removed the temperature sensor from its Pro-series lineup, replacing it with a new hardware feature called "HiLight" on the Pixel 11 Pro. This shift marks a return to a classic smartphone utility, providing users with a dedicated visual alert system that operates independently of the main display.
The HiLight feature is a notification LED positioned exactly where the thermometer previously sat on the device's chassis. According to promotional materials from Google, the system allows users to color-code favorite contacts and specific notifications, enabling them to "know when to pick up and when to keep your phone face down." The hardware supports nine distinct colors: Blue, Cyan, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Turquoise, White, and Yellow.
A pivot from experimental hardware
Google first introduced the rear-facing temperature sensor with the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023, intending for users to measure the temperature of both people and objects. While the technology was an ambitious addition to the Pro series, it saw limited mainstream adoption over the following years. By removing the sensor in the Pixel 11 Pro, Google is repurposing valuable internal hardware space to address a long-standing request from its user base: the return of the notification light.
Improving user glanceability
This hardware change signals a strategic pivot away from niche, experimental tools in favor of utility-driven features that enhance the daily user experience. In an era dominated by "always-on" displays, which can be battery-intensive or distracting, a dedicated LED provides a low-power method for glanceability.
