Kenyan startup Chargebyte has won the SME & Startup Category at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 Awards, recognizing its efforts to combat energy poverty. The company is deploying solar-hybrid mobile charging and connectivity stations across Kenya and Rwanda to provide essential power and internet access to underserved regions.
Competing against entries from 62 countries, Chargebyte was honored for infrastructure that integrates clean energy with digital services. To date, the company has deployed more than 38 stations across its two primary markets, serving over 20,000 monthly users. These hubs are strategically placed in high-traffic public spaces, healthcare facilities, and off-grid schools to ensure that critical digital tools remain operational.
Local Manufacturing and Technical Scale
A key driver of the company's scalability is its commitment to local production. The stations are manufactured in Kenya, a strategy that provides a 30-40% cost advantage over imported alternatives. This local approach allows for faster deployment and maintenance in challenging environments.
Technically, the stations are designed for high capacity and resilience. Output power ranges from 5kW to 50kW, with each unit featuring between 20 and 100 charging ports. To ensure connectivity in remote areas, the hubs utilize 4G/5G and Mesh networking. Reliability is further bolstered by battery backups capable of sustaining operations for anywhere from 72 hours to seven days without active solar input.
Addressing the Connectivity Gap
The initiative arrives as Sub-Saharan Africa continues to face a severe energy crisis. Currently, over 600 million people in the region lack reliable electricity, while 300 million remain without internet access. This gap creates a ripple effect: EdTech devices in schools sit idle, clinics struggle with spoiled vaccines, and small businesses lose revenue due to power instability.
CEO and co-founder Quinter Ochieng developed the model based on her personal experience growing up in a rural Kenyan village with unreliable power. "I built Chargebyte first for cities," Ochieng said. "Then I visited a school in rural Kenya where students had tablets but no power to charge them. I knew that gap personally. So we rebuilt the model for the communities that needed it most."
Industry Implications and Partnerships
By combining IoT technology with solar energy, Chargebyte is creating a scalable blueprint for digital inclusion that supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7, 9, and 10. The model demonstrates that African-led, locally relevant tech solutions can effectively address global infrastructure challenges.
To expand its reach, Chargebyte has established strategic partnerships with global organizations, including UNICEF, Giga, 500 Global, and SURGiA. These collaborations help integrate the stations into broader humanitarian and development frameworks.
