OpenAI removes text limits for ChatGPT as platform hits 1 billion weekly users

Under the new update, Free and Go tier users are transitioning to the GPT-5.6 Luna model as their default, replacing the previous GPT-5.5 Instant. Along with unlimited text chatting, free users now have access to a "Think" button, which allows the model to engage in higher-level reasoning for complex questions. However, OpenAI clarified that limits remain in place for non-text tools, including image generation and file uploads.

A tiered approach to intelligence

This update is part of a broader strategy to diversify OpenAI's model offerings through the GPT-5.6 series. By splitting the series into "Luna" for free and entry-level tiers and "Sol" for paid subscribers, the company can better manage the immense compute requirements of its growing user base. While free users receive the Luna model, Plus and Pro subscribers are upgraded to GPT-5.6 Sol, which includes a granular "thinking slider" to manually control the depth of the AI's reasoning.

Internal evaluations provided by OpenAI indicate that these new models are significantly more reliable than their predecessors. According to the company, GPT-5.6 Luna produces 62% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5 Instant, while the high-end GPT-5.6 Sol model shows a 68% reduction in errors.
