Samsung Pairs One UI 9 Foldables With Chopin-Inspired Ringtone

The tech giant partners with award-winning pianist Yekwon Sunwoo to bring classical elegance to the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8.

Samsung has introduced a new classical ringtone based on Frédéric Chopin’s “Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2” as a centerpiece of its One UI 9 software. The audio addition marks a strategic effort to blend high art with mobile technology, debuting specifically on the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8.

The recording features a performance by Yekwon Sunwoo, who made history as the first Korean pianist to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017. To ensure high-fidelity audio, the piece was recorded at the Samsung Galaxy Sound Studios located within the Samsung Seoul R&D Campus. The final production involved professional mixing by Young Jae Jang and Byeong Joon Hwang of Sound Mirror Korea.

A Tradition of Sound Identity

This release follows a long-standing Samsung tradition of pairing flagship hardware launches with distinct auditory experiences. While the Galaxy S series typically introduces a new iteration of the "Over the Horizon" theme, the company has increasingly leaned toward classical compositions for its foldable lineup. This approach was previously seen with the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, which featured Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons."

According to Myoung Woo Nam, Principal Sound Designer for the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, the choice of the nocturne was intended to evoke the stillness of the night, allowing a gentle resonance to integrate into the user's daily rhythms. Sunwoo noted that the acoustics of the Samsung studio provided an ideal setting to bring the timeless emotion of classical music to a global audience of Galaxy users.

Strategic Implications

Beyond simple aesthetics, the selection of Chopin’s Op. 9 serves as a symbolic nod to the version number of the accompanying software, One UI 9. By integrating world-class performances into the operating system, Samsung is attempting to cultivate a sophisticated "sound identity" for the Galaxy brand. This strategy positions the device not just as a productivity tool, but as a curator of cultural experiences, differentiating the premium foldable line from competitors through sensory branding.

Looking Ahead

As the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8 enter the market, the industry will be watching to see if this high-art approach influences other software updates or hardware tiers. For now, the Chopin nocturne remains a signature element of the newest generation of foldable hardware, serving as a primary auditory differentiator for the One UI 9 launch.
