Oluwaniyi Raji, a tech content specialist at Android Police, has abandoned his Spotify subscription in favor of a self-hosted music server. The move highlights a growing tension between the convenience of streaming algorithms and the desire for permanent digital ownership.

Following a price increase, Raji migrated his music library to a setup centered on Jellyfin, a free and open-source platform used to index his collection and pull metadata from MusicBrainz. To solve the issue of Jellyfin's primarily video-centric interface, Raji utilized the Finamp beta as his Android client. Finamp provides a layout similar to commercial streaming apps, featuring artist shortcuts and recently played albums. For his podcast needs, he transitioned to AntennaPod, a separate free application.

The Push for Digital Ownership

This shift is part of a broader "de-streaming" trend driven by rising subscription costs and a growing discomfort with "renting" access to media. Many users are returning to personal FLAC or MP3 collections, often hosting them via Raspberry Pi or Docker to ensure their libraries cannot be altered or removed by a third-party provider. As Raji noted, he is a firm believer in digital ownership and prefers buying music over renting a library that could disappear at any time.

The High-Fidelity Trade-off

Technically, the self-hosted infrastructure has reached a level of maturity that rivals commercial services. Raji's current configuration supports gapless playback and allows for offline downloads in either the original lossless quality or transcoded versions. This provides a level of audio fidelity and stability that is often superior to the compressed streams offered by standard subscription tiers.

However, the transition reveals a significant gap in the open-source ecosystem: the loss of AI-driven curation. While the technical playback is seamless, the discovery of new music is not. Raji admitted that music discovery is where the self-hosted setup is inferior to Spotify, noting that he would rather be honest about this limitation than pretend otherwise.

The Discovery Hurdle

This case underscores the primary conflict for users leaving major platforms. While tools like Jellyfin and Finamp have solved the problem of delivery and interface, they cannot replicate the massive data sets and recommendation engines that power Spotify's discovery features. For the modern listener, the choice is now a binary one: accept the monthly fee for a curated experience or manage their own infrastructure to secure their library.

What remains to be seen is whether the open-source community can develop decentralized discovery tools that offer the benefits of AI without the requirement of a corporate subscription.
