UAG Fixes Magnetic Accessory Fitment for Galaxy Z Fold 8 Series
A strategic design tweak to UAG's new cases allows square Qi2 chargers and wallets to fit flush against Samsung's latest foldables.
UAG has launched a new line of protective cases for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra that resolve a persistent compatibility issue with square magnetic accessories. By integrating a specific material relief cutout, the company ensures that Qi2-compatible hardware can sit flush against the device.
The new cases feature a small cutout at the bottom of the camera opening, a design choice specifically intended to accommodate square-shaped Qi2 chargers, wallets, and stands. According to Andrew Romero of 9to5Google, this relief provides "the perfect amount of space" for these accessories to attach securely. This solves a common problem where the physical dimensions of a protective case, combined with the device's camera housing, prevent non-circular magnetic accessories from making full contact with the phone.
The Samsung Magnet Gap
Samsung Galaxy devices, including the Z Fold 8 and the S26 series, do not feature internal magnets similar to those found in Google Pixel phones. To bridge this gap, many third-party case manufacturers embed magnets into their shells to enable the use of magnetic ecosystems. However, the physical placement of Samsung's camera bumps often interferes with the position of the wireless charging coil. When a standard case is added, this interference typically makes the phone incompatible with any magnetic accessory that isn't perfectly circular.
Why Alignment Matters
Precise alignment via Qi2 magnets is essential for maximizing wireless charging efficiency and ensuring that heavy accessories, such as car mounts or MagSafe-style batteries, remain securely attached. For the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which supports 20W wireless charging, any gap between the charger and the coil can lead to reduced charging speeds or overheating. UAG's design allows users to access a broader ecosystem of square-shaped accessories without having to remove their case or settle for limited circular options.
Looking Ahead
As the Qi2 standard becomes more prevalent across the Android ecosystem, the demand for seamless accessory integration is expected to grow. While UAG has addressed the physical fitment issue for the Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra, it remains to be seen if Samsung will integrate native magnetic arrays into future hardware to eliminate the need for such case-level workarounds.
