Waymo has integrated Google's Gemini AI into its new Ojai robotaxi platform to serve as a conversational assistant for passengers. The move signals a strategic shift toward treating the autonomous vehicle as a personalized digital space rather than just a mode of transport.
The Ojai platform introduces a redesigned cabin featuring a three-screen LED interface that displays dynamic content based on passenger occupancy. Waymo describes the interior as a "living room on wheels," designed from the ground up for ride-hailing to provide a flexible, premium experience. Central to this experience is Gemini, which acts as a virtual tour guide and concierge. Passengers can use voice commands to adjust air conditioning temperature, request the vehicle to pull over, or ask for recommendations on local coffee shops and landmarks.
A New Hardware Foundation
Beyond the AI interface, the Ojai debuts the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. This updated hardware suite is specifically engineered for improved performance in challenging weather, including snowy conditions. Unlike previous iterations that relied on modifying existing consumer vehicles, the Ojai is a purpose-built platform, allowing Waymo to optimize the synergy between the vehicle's physical layout and its software ecosystem.
While Gemini handles the passenger interface, it does not have direct control over the vehicle's driving functions. Instead, the AI processes user requests and issues the corresponding commands to the underlying system, maintaining a strict separation between the conversational layer and the critical autonomous driving stack.
