The robotics industry is currently defined by a sharp divergence between the high-investment promise of humanoid robots and the practical, scaled deployment of mobile manipulators. While biomimetic systems capture global headlines, specialized machines combining autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) with robotic arms are already dominating the factory floor.

This divide is most evident in the commercial data. Unitree Robotics has emerged as a primary driver of the humanoid trend, shipping over 5,500 humanoid robots in 2025, excluding its wheeled dual-arm models. This scale contributed to a reported 2025 revenue of 1.70 billion yuan, a trajectory that culminated in the company's IPO on the Shanghai STAR Market in August 2026. However, despite these numbers, mobile manipulators remain more prevalent in industrial warehouse settings than full humanoids, as they offer a more stable and efficient solution for specific logistics tasks.

The Rise of Embodied AI

The current surge in development is driven by the shift toward "embodied AI," where advanced AI models are integrated into physical bodies to create general-purpose utility. Humanoid robotics and software startups have emerged weekly over the past year, capturing billions of dollars in investment. This capital is aimed at creating machines that can navigate human environments without modification. However, the path to mass adoption is hindered by significant technical barriers, specifically in power management, 360-degree perception, and the massive data collection required to build accurate world models.

The Efficiency Gap

This technical friction is why mobile manipulators—which pair a mobile base with a manipulator arm—are currently the preferred choice for industry. By eschewing the complexity of bipedal balance and human-like form, these systems provide the reliability needed for 24/7 warehouse operations. The competition between these specialized tools and general-purpose humanoids will ultimately determine the efficiency of future manufacturing. While humanoids offer flexibility, the immediate economic value is found in the precision and uptime of non-humanoid mobile systems.

Future Outlook

Industry observers are now watching whether the humanoid sector can move beyond commercial trials into the same level of ubiquity seen by AMRs. The rapid commercialization of these systems in China signals a structural shift in global tech trade toward intelligent biomimetic systems. The key metric for the next few years will be whether humanoid robots can solve their power and perception hurdles fast enough to displace the specialized mobile manipulators that already hold the industrial advantage.
