Nuremberg Airport Uses VR Simulation to De-Risk Ramp Training
The airport is using Cologne-based Draxon GmbH technology to train ground staff in high-stakes aircraft handling without real-world risk.
Nuremberg Airport has integrated virtual reality (VR) training into its ground operations to prepare staff for the high-pressure environment of apron and ramp services. The initiative bridges the gap between classroom theory and live aircraft handling by simulating critical maneuvers in a risk-free digital space.
Developed by Cologne-based Draxon GmbH, the system utilizes VR headsets and joysticks to recreate realistic airport environments. Trainees use the technology to practice a wide array of ramp service operations, including aircraft marshalling, the operation of ground power units and baggage conveyor belts, driving tow tractors, and executing complex pushback procedures. The program currently trains approximately 50 new employees annually while providing essential refresher courses for veteran staff.
A New Intermediary Step
Traditionally, ramp service training at Nuremberg Airport followed a rigid path: one day of theoretical instruction followed immediately by practical application on the tarmac. The introduction of VR creates a safe intermediary phase. This allows trainees to build confidence and experience critical, high-stress scenarios that would be too dangerous or prohibitively expensive to simulate using actual aircraft and heavy ground equipment.
Improving Operational Safety
By simulating high-pressure situations without the threat of personnel injury or costly aircraft damage, the airport can significantly elevate its safety standards. The technology focuses on enhancing the decision-making skills of ground staff before they enter the live operational environment. The primary goal is for trainees to overcome their fears and practice new tasks without risk, ensuring staff learn to make the right decisions even under pressure.
The Future of Ground Handling
As Nuremberg Airport scales this simulation-based approach, the focus remains on reducing the learning curve for new hires and maintaining a high standard of precision for existing staff. While the VR system provides a controlled environment for skill acquisition, the airport continues to integrate these simulations as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, final practical certification on the ramp.
