Universal Robots Launches Gen 7 Platform to Scale Physical AI in Factories

Universal Robots unveiled its seventh-generation robotics platform, Gen 7, at the IMTS trade show to accelerate the deployment of physical AI in industrial settings. The launch marks a strategic shift for the Teradyne subsidiary, moving toward hardware that seamlessly integrates AI compute and high-bandwidth sensors.

The platform introduces three new robot arms—the UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300, and UR18g-950—named according to their payload in kilograms and reach in millimeters. Central to the update is the CB7 core controller, which delivers 40% more compute power while occupying a footprint 30% smaller than previous generations. Users will interact with the TP7 Core teach pendant, which is over 20% lighter and equipped with a virtual joystick and full HD display. Additionally, the g-Series tool flange now includes the SP7 Smart Panel, featuring LED lights, three configurable buttons, and safety-compliant freedrive.

The Push for Physical AI

Universal Robots is positioning itself as a leader in "physical AI," an effort to move AI capabilities out of controlled laboratory environments and onto the factory floor. This transition is backed by strong financial momentum; Teradyne has credited AI as a primary driver of its revenue growth for five consecutive quarters. To support this industrial transition, the Gen 7 platform is certified to ISO 10218-1 and UL1740 standards, and it meets IEC 62443-4-1 ML3 requirements for cybersecurity.

Solving Industrial Bottlenecks

By integrating these capabilities into the core hardware and the PolyScope X operating system, UR aims to eliminate common deployment hurdles, such as the cabling complexity associated with wrist-mounted cameras and the need for secure network architectures. A critical component of this approach is the maintenance of safety protocols. The Teradyne Robotics Group intends for the system to be the "destination platform for physical AI," ensuring the robot will reject AI commands that conflict with established safety settings.

As industrial operators increasingly look to integrate vision systems and autonomous decision-making, the Gen 7 platform provides the necessary infrastructure to scale these technologies without compromising safety.
